WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GUARD MEMBER
Good character
- Demonstrated honesty, integrity, and respect for others
- Willingness to serve selflessly and uphold ethical standards
Clean or acceptable criminal record
- Ability to pass a state and/or federal background check
- No serious felony convictions or disqualifying offenses
Age eligibility
- Meet the state’s minimum and maximum age requirements
- Waivers may be available in some cases
State residency
- Resident of the state you wish to serve (or eligible under state policy)
Physical and medical fitness
- Sufficient health and mobility to safely perform assigned duties
- Standards are generally attainable and mission-appropriate
Mental fitness and judgment
- Ability to follow lawful orders
- Sound decision-making under stress
- Emotional stability and professionalism
Commitment and reliability
- Willingness to attend training and periodic drills
- Availability for activation during state emergencies
Respect for authority and the rule of law
- Commitment to supporting civil authorities
- Understanding of the chain of command and lawful service
Trainability
- Willingness to learn military customs, emergency response skills, and state-specific procedures
- Prior military experience welcomed but not required
Service-oriented mindset
- Desire to help communities during disasters and emergencies
- Pride in serving close to home
